Today we went out to visit a rural village. Since Suichuan
is so far from Nanchang we're not able to visit Gracie's
orphanage. Our guide took us to a village that is similar to the
area that our girls are from. It was both amazing to see and
heartbraking. These people have next to nothing yet they seem
very happy. The poverty, the smells and sights are frightening
to us westerners but they joy on the people's faces was amazing.
These people don't seem to know they're missing anything in
life...maybe we should think about that. During the walk through
the village, it struck me that this would have been Gracie's
life if we had not adopted her. At that moment, it became too
personal and I started to cry thinking of what could have been.
It was an experience I won't forget anytime soon.
After returning from the countryside we had lunch at the hotel
and walked over to visit an old Temple. On the grounds, within
walking distance of the hotel, is a Budhist and Confucian
temple. They were both breath taking and the grounds were
lovely. This temple was built before the discovery of America.
We had a nice time.
We went out for a group dinner again. This time we separated
into spicy and non-spicy groups. Of course I made Rodney go to
the spicy table with me and we both loved it. Every dish was
hotter than the one before. We had a blast at dinner.
Gracie continues to open up more every day. She is a good
sleeper and is now almost completely on American formula. She is
making quite the impression with her clothes. Everyone wants to
see what Gracie will wear the next day. She loves to be in the
Baby Bjorn carrier and doesn't wiggle around too much. She has
the best smile and really enjoys playing with us.
We're really liking Nanchang and the local people are wonderful.
We make quite the stir here and people are all very curious
about the westerners with the Chinese babies. Our guide made
cards for us to let people read explaining what we're doing and
where the girls are from. Today we got the film developed from
Gracie's cameras we sent to the orphanage. They used all 3
cameras and the pictures are priceless. The pictures really show
how much Gracie, and the other babies, were cared for. There are
pictures of Gracie wearing some of the outfits I sent as well as
her sleeping with her blanket. The pictures will be priceless
for us. |
